Outdoor Greek tragedy is back this June!

Picture
We are proud to once again partner with our sister organization, Cappella Clausura, for an epic outdoor production.

Iphigenia Among the Taurians

By Euripides

Translated by Rachel Hadas

Friday, June 3rd at 8 PM
Saturday, June 4th at 2 PM and 8 PM
Sunday, June 5th at 8 PM

The Hyde Bandstand, Newton Highlands (90 Lincoln Street)

Tickets available here

What if Iphigenia, whom her father Agamemnon sacrificed before his expedition to Troy, did not die, but was spirited away by Artemis to one of her temples? And what if her distraught brother Orestes, still running from the Furies, happens to find himself at the very temple that Iphigenia now presides over?

This Euripidean tragicomedy, with a plot twist and happy ending, is the playwright’s second take on the story of Iphigenia. In 2018 NTC performed Euripides' tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis, a play that ends with Iphigenia's sacrifice. This summer, come see Iphigenia Among the Taurians, Euripides’ drama about healing and homecoming. Of special note: Cappella Clausura singers will chant the Chorus parts with original music by Amelia LeClair!

Newton Theatre Company Stands with Black Lives Matter.

As a troupe, we know we can do more to share more diverse stories and uplift voices that have historically been silenced. As part of our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, we commit to casting a minimum of 50% of each season's roles with artists of color and pledge that at least 40% of the shows in each season will tell stories from under-represented communities
. As our new season gets underway, we continue to look for innovative ways to collaborate with new communities and artists.

Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

Thank you to everyone who witnessed Our Tears Are the Same Color: Parallel Narratives of Bereaved Palestinian and Israeli Women

This world premiere production was a powerful in-person start to the 2022 portion of our season. It was so special to be able to share these powerful stories with you all and we look forward to continuing to use theatre to push for a more just world.

A Note from the Artistic Director

“Unprecedented” doesn’t even begin to describe the past few years, but we are immensely grateful to the community of in-person and virtual audiences who have challenged us and kept us afloat. We have pushed ourselves to determine the type of art we want to make, and the work we want to do for the people that we serve.

In 2020, we released our anti-racism action plan, which included pledges that:

  • At least 50 percent of our roles across the year’s productions will be cast with artists of color
  • At least 40 percent of our plays will tell stories from under-represented communities
  • We will continue to look into new ways to promote anti-racism throughout our organization

With our 2021-2022 season, we are thrilled to introduce you to our new, all-female board. Be sure to say hello if you see them at our shows!

For more information about upcoming performances, you can like our Facebook page or subscribe to our email list.

Stay tuned for more details about our exciting upcoming season!

Hope to see you at our next show!
