THE MONOLOGUE PROJECt

"If The Monologue Project existed when I was a kid it would have changed my life for the better.  Your work matters."
             - Participant in The Monologue Project: LGBTQ+ Voices

Newton Theatre Company's The Monologue Project is an initiative that seeks to bring the community together through the power of personal storytelling. Each production highlights a different community group in Newton, creating a space for individuals to share their authentic selves. Newton Theatre Company celebrates the power of monologues to connect people and promote empathy.

We start with one prompt: Tell us your story.
Remembering the Goldstein Family

Dear Newton Theatre Company Community,

All of us at Newton Theatre Company were heartbroken to learn of the tragic and sudden passing of the Goldstein family over the winter holidays. The Newton community is grieving a beautiful family, and Newton Theatre Company is grieving two beloved actors, Matt and Valerie.

Matt was there at the start of Newton Theatre Company.  He graced the stage in The Song of Achilles Part I and II, The Hipster, The Imaginary Invalid, The Importance of Being Earnest, Women, It’s A Wonderful Life, Pinocchio and countless Junie B. Jones adaptations. He had a terrific dry sense of humor and always brought such joy to each production.  Matt was the coolest Odysseus ever as well as a debonaire butler.
Valerie started acting with Newton Theatre Company when she joined the youth program in elementary school. She was in nine musicals with the group! Val was one of six amazingly talented middle school students I directed in a special production of You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.  She was the kindest, most adorable Snoopy there could be, and beloved by her castmates.

Val continued to work with NTC throughout middle and high school. She and her sister Violet were in
The Hipster and several Junie B. Jones productions. Val also acted in Iphigenia Among the Taurians and Pinocchio.

One of my favorite memories is directing Val and Matt in Pinocchio together. We did it in a commedia dell'arte style - only four actors and many masks. Matt and Val were brilliant.

Valerie was involved with three Monologue Projects: Voices of Color, Common Threads: Voices of Asian-American Women and Girls and LGBTQ+ Voices, co-directing the latter two. She was an inspirational director, empowering others to share their stories.

Lyla and Violet were always there with enthusiastic support, cheering Matt and Valerie on and enjoying every moment.

Please consider donating to the Goldstein Memorial Fund in memory of the family.
